‘Every family has it’s cross to bear’, so goes the familiar saying. And it’s true because everyone has experienced something unpleasant in their past, a so-called traumatic experience, or would have liked certain things to have worked out differently in their life.

Sometimes, these experiences don’t affect our lives. However, it is also possible that these experiences from the past still bother us. For example, you keep dreaming about it, can’t stop mulling over the traumatic event or you notice that it continues to affect your behavior, because it has made you insecure or anxious.

A traumatic experience from your youth

If you experienced a traumatic event in your youth, it is possible that the problems you experienced as a child continue to affect you as an adult. You don’t really understand why, but you would really like to get rid of them.

EMDR for trauma

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. EMDR is a short-term therapy that can be used if you suffer from psychological problems as a result of an unpleasant event or trauma.

During this therapy, you will be asked to reflect back on that particular traumatic event. In this phase, you bring back memories, after which a stimulation is provided by moving images or sounds. Occupying part of your brain will ease the emotional charge of the traumatic event and enable you to ‘process’ the event, which will eventually allow the psychological problems to disappear.
